Set in Germany in the early 1930s, the play centers on the artistic partnership between German composer Richard Strauss and Austrian writer Stefan Zweig on the opera Die Schweigsame Frau (The Silent Woman). As the Nazis rise to power, they demand Strauss stop working with Zweig because he is Jewish. The play highlights the conflict between artistic aspiration and political ideology. It deals with the friendship between the two men and the pressure of the Nazi regime upon them.

Sir Ronald Harwood is an Academy Award winning playwright and screenwriter. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, he moved to London in 1951 and among many other accolades was awarded a CBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1999.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The National Jewish Theater Foundation presented its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award to Alfred Uhry. The presentation took place as part of the Lincoln Center Library event on January 27th 2025 in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz

Lifetime Achievement Award

On September 30, 2024, French playwright, Mr. Jean Claude Grumberg received the Lifetime Achievement Award. It was presented by NJTF HTII President, Arnold Mittelman with Dominique Trimbur, PhD-Manager for the History of Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, Teaching of the Holocaust of Fondation Pour La Memoir de la Shoah Project.
