The Candlesticks
Author(s): Helene Weintraub
During World War II, a Jewish baby girl is found on the doorstep of a young Christian married couple in Mexico City. Along with the infant, the couple finds only a perplexing note and a set of candlesticks. They decide to raise the child in their Christian home, and the candlesticks are put away and forgotten. A Jewish neighbor seems to take special interest in the child. One day after the war ends, a stranger, Samuel Katz, arrives from Europe looking for his sister. As a terrible earthquake strikes Mexico City, all the characters are faced with difficult questions and answers. The play is about finding families and reconnecting with Jewish roots after the Holocaust.
